REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ATMO 463

We recommend that ATMO 463, Air Pollution Meteorology, be certified as a writing-intensive (W) course for the next three academic years (9/07 to 9/11).  We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.      Percentage of final grade based on writing quality (50-70% )<!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportLists]-->2.      Course content appropriate to the major <!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.      Total number of words (4000)<!--[endif]-->

 ATMO 463 requires a major research paper worth 25% of the final grade. Students must complete this paper to pass the course. A rough draft is reviewed by the instructor and students are given the opportunity to revise.  Two homework assignments prepare students for writing this paper: they must submit a complete literature review, a brief discussion of the relevance to their paper topic of each of the items included, and an abstract of their paper.

The changes made in this class include the following: marking of drafts based on UWC-posted guidelines, in-class discussion of texts, and double turn-around of final assignment. No other significant changes have been made since original certification was granted.
