UWC hosts summit on Internet tutoring

Writing center administrators discuss best practices and a refreshed philosophy for using the Internet to tutor writers during the June 15-16 summit on writing center technology.

Writing center administrators from a dozen universities convened at the Texas A&M University Writing Center today for a summit on philosophy for tutoring writing online. "Although online writing labs are commonplace in writing centers, they exist in many different shapes and forms," said Dr. Valerie M. Balester, executive director of the UWC and host for the summit. "Online writing centers are a relatively new concept for universities, and at large universities in particular, the Web is the obvious way to reach the largest and most diverse segment of students. Our goal is to figure out how to do that effectively." The summit will yield a series of documents that propose online tutorial solutions that fit the needs of a broad range of university users.
