Summer 2005 was a period of rapid change for the University Writing Center’s technology services and online presence. In January 2005, the UWC’s administrative staff began to assess the state of the center’s Web offerings and discussed some guiding principles for a Web redesign. Many of those ideas are visible on this site.
Several people were involved in the Web project. UWC Communications Coordinator Brady Creel and an intern, Mark Wolfe ’05, evaluated the UWC’s needs and designed and developed this site over the course of the summer. Code was stripped of its traditional HTML tags and was readied for CSS as it was migrated from static pages into Mambo, a database-powered content management system. Writing consultants combed through student resources, making corrections and updates. Later, content was reorganized into sections and categories so resources would be easier to find. To top it off, a search engine portal was added to every page.
Mambo is a PHP-powered content management system that uses a MySQL database on its back end. The site’s template is called Macphoria and is inspired by the clean-and-simple look of Apple products. The site is hosted on a Power Mac G5 server.

There seems to have been in every period of the past, as there is now, a distinct apprehension in the minds of very many worthy persons that the English tongue is always in the condition approaching collapse, and that arduous efforts must be put forth, and put forth persistently, in order to save it from destruction. — Thomas R. Lounsbury, The Standard of Usage in English (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1908): 1-2. |
