The University Writing Center (UWC) encourages students to make appointments for one-on-one consultations. We can help with any kind of writing and at any stage of the writing process, whether you’re narrowing your topic, organizing your ideas, or proofreading your final draft.
Sessions typically last between 30 and 45 minutes and give you a chance to gain a fresh perspective on your writing by discussing it with a certified and experienced writing consultant.
You may make appointments online or by calling the UWC at (979) 458-1455. If you have not yet made an appointment in our new scheduling system, please create an account before making appointments by phone. You can make appointments for either one of our two locations: Evans Library or West Campus Library.
Graduate Students Working on Theses or Dissertations
Writing a thesis or dissertation? UWC consultations for dissertations and theses are now limited to eight total, but with this program, you will gain the advantage of working with the same consultant, who will know your writing concerns and who will coach you to work independently between sessions. The first step to getting help with your thesis or dissertation is to fill out this form.
Graduate students with an immediate deadline should make a single appointment by following the instructions above. Please note that these appointments will still be limited to eight for dissertations and theses. Those in need of line-by-line editing must contact our list of paid editors.
Our Ground Rules:
- Got a quick question? Visit the front desk. If it will take longer than five minutes to answer, you will need an appointment.
- We do not discuss grades.
- Papers you bring to a UWC consultation must be your original work. We can help you learn to document your sources, if you ask.
- Unless you notify us, your appointment may be forfeited if you are more than five minutes late.
- It’s up to you to establish the direction and content of the session and be an active participant.
- Information from a session may be used for research, but your name will not be used.
- Consultations are limited to one per day. Graduate students are limited to no more than eight consultations total for their theses or dissertations.

Tidbits

I learned that you should feel when writing, not like Lord Byron on a mountain top, but like a child stringing beads in kindergarten - happy, absorbed and quietly putting one bead on after another.
