REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANTH 401

We recommend that ANTH 401 Ice Age Humans in North America be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/17 to 1/21). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 35%
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 2600
  4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:15

For ANTH 410, students write a long paper (2000 words) and a short paper (600 words). A draft of the longer paper is reviewed by the instructor and given written feedback as well as encouragement to discuss revisions during office hours. Instruction includes readings about scientific writing and two half-class lectures devoted to that topic; in addition, students read model scientific journal articles and book chapters.
