REPORT ON CERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANTH 350

We recommend that ANTH 350 Archeology of the Old World be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (9/17 to 9/21). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 50
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 4000
  4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:30
The committee noted that the enrollment of 30 for the course may be high and should be monitored. Students are required to submit two papers related to the course topic, and both receive written instructor comments in draft form. One also is peer reviewed in class. In addition, the instructor provides general comments in class that apply to common problems. Instruction includes review of examples, moving students through the writing process from proposal to final academic essay. The University Writing Center presents on scientific writing and on writing clearly and concisely.
