REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANSC 414

We recommend that ANSC 414 Sheep and Goat Production be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/16 to 1/20). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 28%
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 4250
  4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:15
This is a four-credit course in which two graduate assistants help critique the writing. Students complete three assignments individually (9 pages and 20%) and write up a major project collaboratively (8 pages and 8%). Each of these assignments is based on a specific area of sheep and goat production from the class content. The papers are peer reviewed, and a draft of the final project write-up is reviewed by the instructor. Two class periods are devoted to writing workshops for the collaborative writing project. Several lectures are devoted to writing instruction, some by guest lecturers.

No significant changes have been made since original certification was granted.
