REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ANSC 406

We recommend that ANSC 406 Beef Cattle Production and Management be certified as a Communication (C) course for four academic years (1/18 to 1/22). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 37.5
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 1500
  4. Total minutes of oral performance: 15
  5. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:23

This is a four-credit course. Since original certification, the course has not changed significantly. Graduate Assistant Teachers assist with commenting on an outline and draft of the research paper and two preliminary presentations. Writing assignments include an individual research paper and a group project on ranch management. Students do 2 brief and 1 longer group presentation on the ranch management project. There are 4-5 students per group, and the time is divided between them (about 1 minute each for the short presentations as practice, and about 3-4 minutes each for the long presentation, with each graded separately). They also contribute to writing slides for each presentation. The draft of the paper and an outline are reviewed by an instructor or Graduate Assistant Teacher and a peer. The first two ranch management presentations are assessed by the instructor and the peer and are used to prepare for the final oral presentation. Instruction includes detailed guidelines for each assignment, information on using data from sources, organization, citation, writing style, slide design, presentation delivery, and time management for presentations. Examples are provided for the writing assignment.
