REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: ANSC 314
We recommend that ANSC 314 Wool and Mohair Evaluation be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/16 to 1/20). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:
- Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 50%
- Course content appropriate to the major
- Total number of words: 3250
- Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:30 with the additional help of professional peers
This is a two-credit course. Two graduate teaching assistants assist the professor, and a team of 15 Professional Peers, winners in the previous semester’s judging contest, help evaluate the Reasons assignments. Six of these also attend classes and are available to provide additional guidance. The Reasons assignment is four sets of written reasons that justify judging decisions; students also complete five additional assignments related to their reading and classwork. For example, every other week students choose one of four scientific journal articles that they critique in writing. These are all in the same genre, so formative feedback is provided by a timely return of assignments with written instructor comments. Some assignments also go through peer review. Several lectures are devoted to writing issues, some taught by guest lecturers who are experts in research writing.
No significant changes have been made since original certification was granted.
