REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF C COURSE: ALED 340

We recommend that ALED 340 Survey of Leadership Theory be certified as a Communication (C) course for four academic years (1/18 to 1/22). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 39
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 2750
  4. Total minutes of oral performance: 5
  5. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:25

This course has not changed significantly. Graduate Assistant Teachers are trained to help with this multi-section course. They meet weekly with the instructor of record. Students write a leader observation, a leadership TV review, and an analysis of leadership theory; they also present their leadership review orally. Formative feedback is given as written instructor comments on drafts of each assignment. On presentations, students peer review each other’s outlines, and the assistant reviews outlines as well. Instruction includes workshops or lecture on public speaking and APA style.
