REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AGSC 402
 
We recommend that AGSC 402 Designing Instruction for Secondary Agricultural Science Programs be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/17 to 1/21). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:
 
  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 52%
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 5000
  4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:24 
Since original certification, previous assignments have been consolidated, and new assignments have been added. A graduate assistant helps with this course and with grading writing assignments. Students create three lesson plans and, for each, a self-critique of that plan (with a revision). They also create an FFA unit and a plan for an instruction simulation activity. The self-assessment serves as one aspect of the formative feedback, coupled with the grade and comments assigned on the lesson plan; the assignment is re-graded once it is revised. Instruction includes the presentation of model lesson plans, class discussion about format (important for lesson plans), and the completion of in-class writing activities that help students practice writing various components of lesson plans. Facilitated class discussions are conducted when grade work is returned.
