REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AGEC 217

We recommend that AGEC 217 Fundamentals of Agricultural Economics Analysis be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/17 to 1/21). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Percentage of final grade based on writing quality: 35%
  2. Course content appropriate to the major
  3. Total number of words: 2750
  4. Instructor to student ratio for one section: 1:30
Graduate assistants help manage this course grading. The instructor oversees a departmental writing center that provides assistance to AGEC 217 students. Students write a research paper, for which they get formative feedback on a draft, and three agricultural policy papers. Writing instruction includes lectures on the writing process, in-class writing exercises, and the review of samples.
No significant changes have been made since original certification.
