REPORT ON RECERTIFICATION OF W COURSE: AGCJ 313

We recommend that AGCJ 313 Agricultural media Writing I be certified as a writing (W) course for four academic years (1/19 to 1/23). We have reviewed a representative syllabus and have determined that the course meets or exceeds the following criteria: (1) 90% of the final grade is based on writing quality; (2) the total number of words is 2250; (3) the instructor to student ratio is 1:24; and (4) the assigned writing is appropriate to the major.

Since original certification, the course has not changed significantly. Students write four major assignments, each focused on a different aspect of news writing. They also complete discussion questions and twenty lab assignments. They are provided intermittent feedback on each assignment in the lab setting. For the first major assignment, the students complete a practice writing assignment that is not included in the final grade and receive feedback on the draft version. For the second major assignment, they receive feedback on the first portion before completing the second and third portion. For the third major assignment, they receive feedback in lab on each section as it is written, and they participate in peer review. For the fourth major assignment, they receive feedback in lab from their teaching assistant, participate in peer review, and participate in editor meetings with the instructor before submitting the final assignment. Because this is a writing class, instruction is ongoing.
