Nancy Vazquez has worked at the University Writing Center for more than 20 years, first serving as a part-time writing consultant while her sons were little. Over the years, she has led workshops, been a team leader, taught CRLA consultant training classes, and supervised the center’s media and marketing efforts. She served as the center’s director for 4 years before assuming the executive director role in June of 2023.

Before coming to the UWC, she was an editor for both national and regional publications and taught college English courses in Missouri and Colorado.

Nancy attended Indiana University, where she earned a B.A. in English, and the University of Iowa, where she earned an M.A. in English with an emphasis in expository writing, which is the awkwardly named degree Iowa gave before deciding to award MFAs in non-fiction.  Nancy was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.

Favorite writing strategy: Make your subconscious do some of the heavy lifting of writing. When you’re stuck, go for a walk, do the dishes, or take a nap. When you come back to your work, your brain will often have untangled the verbal knots for you.
